Jane by Design - Pilot

Jane by Design is ABC Family’s new comedy about a teenage girl who manages to get an amazing job as an assistant for a large fashion house. Think Devil Wears Prada meets Mean Girls. Now we meet Jane. She drives a clunker to school and she’s flanked by her BFF Billy. Also, she’s invisible, a little bit like Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries. We find out she’s got a major crush on Nick, the most popular guy in school. Huge surprise, but obviously she and Billy are like a modern day Gordo and Lizzie, I’m calling it now.

Jane’s home life isn’t the best either. She lives with her jobless older brother since their mother has obviously disappeared into thin air and her father died recently. Jane’s a little worried about her brother Ben’s financial situation so she stumbles upon a great job as an intern for a fashion company allowing her to leave school at eleven every day.

At the interview, Jane hijacks someone else’s slot and somehow gets a part-time position as an executive assistant to Andie MacDowell that pays 34K, very much like Christina Applegate in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. Except Andie only communicates with her via skype on a huge flat screen. I think she may live in there. Immediately after her interview Jane is introduced to her arch-nemesis India, yes that’s her name, not her homeland, and she’s a biatch. Luckily Jane has Birdie, again that is her name, to help her out. Now, enter Jeremy. He’s the very sexy British something-or-other. It’s hard to pay attention to what’s going on when he speaks. He has a very suspicious blowup with India that just reeks of sexual tension and swiftly proceeds to romance Jane with his delicious accent.

Back in reality, Jane gets a call from the mortgage company and is informed that Ben’s WAY behind on the payments. This is bad news and prompts Jane to commit fraud, with Billy’s help of course, to make sure she gets the job and the paychecks. Billy is reluctant at first but he caves real quick when Jane promises to go to a party with him. Of course, that’s a priority for sure. This party seems like just the perfect way for Billy to show Jane that they should totally be more than friends, but no! He throws us a huge curveball. Billy’s been banging Lulu, the queen bitch, behind everyone’s back, but she wants to keep it all under wraps because of her daddy issues or maybe she doesn’t want people knowing she’s dating a smart guy. I don’t get it. Obviously, he’s in love with Jane. Billy, what are you doing? While Billy’s off banging Lulu Nick just apparates out of nowhere and flirts with Jane because that’s exactly what hot popular guys do, make googly eyes at Lizzie McGuire, I mean Jane.

The next day, Jane has her first day at work and it’s insane. The girl seems to be phone illiterate, but most importantly, Andie wants her to monitor India like a hawk because the witch with a B is after Andie’s job. Next Jane sits in on this meeting where we learn that their company is immune to the economic downturn so really they can afford to hire as many teenagers as they want.

In a fascinating little tidbit of information, we cut to Ben who is called in to meet with Jane’s advisor. Apparently he was a dick to Rita, the guidance counselor and she is pissed. Now that they’re both sexy adults though, I am near positive they will be dating in T-minus 6 episodes.

Meanwhile, Jane’s at a bar drinking with her coworkers and making googly eyes at Jeremy which he finds very beautiful. Just when he’s about to bed a 16 year old, she’s like “I have got to get out of here” so she bails only to be sideswiped by big brother Ben. He’s worried about her coming in late and forging his signature and all sorts of things but deep down he doesn’t care, because he doesn’t really want to pay the mortgage with his $0 salary anyway. He’s more interested in how she makes his signature look so cool.

At work, Andie MacDowell is freaking out because she is to receive a SHIPMENT today. Yes, a SHIPMENT and Jane needs to keep this SHIPMENT away from India like her life depends on it. It seems that Andie says the word SHIPMENT just like Voldemort says AVADA KEDAVRA. Anyway, it turns out this SHIPMENT is just a bunch of metal broches of different insects. The worst part, Jane is about to miss her midterm because she had to pick up the SHIPMENT. At least she can jack her boss’s Porsche to make it in time. Then she takes that Porsche back to the office and saves her boss’s ass by pitching the sparkly insect jewelry as the inspiration for the new line. Something tells me they’re not going to be able to stay afloat is they keep selling insect broches. Oh no, who will hire all of the teenagers now?

Jane totally floors India with her presentation and confronts her afterward acting all high and mighty so we definitely know who the good guy is. Jane is totally gonna win this one until Andie chews her up for presenting everything without her and then Jane walks in on Jeremy and India breaking in her office. More surprises! At the end of the day though, Billy’s there for her and she’s still got her dream job, not to mention, Billy’s there! He needs to dump that crazy queen bitch.
