Jane By John Hughes

Episode 2 of Jane by Design should have just been called Sixteen Pretty Pink Candles. It’s literally right out of the John Hughes universe. I wasn’t totally sold on it until this episode and now I’m hooked. This episode opens with Billy’s sexual fantasy about Ms. Dean. Once they’re finally at school we see posters for the dance everywhere and Billy immediately asks her to be his date, he’s totally into her. I know it! This week, I’ve learned that Andie MacDowell’s character is named Gray, or maybe Grey. That investigation is still pending. Turns out, Gray needs Jane to work on Saturday at a fashion preview which means the dance is definitely a no-go.

Jane has a tiny meltdown in the elevator with Birdie and the latest gay best friend. This one is about 20 years younger and 20 shades darker. Were we not supposed to notice? Anyway, Jane has got to get to work on this fashion preview assignment but Jeremy and his sexiness keeps getting in her way. He is just trying to help her but she can’t get that image of him and India out of her head. Jane quickly ushers him away and India comes in just in time to give Jane another piece of unsolicited and misleading advice. Thanks India, we can always count on you to shit on the parade.

Out at the country club, Billy’s working as a golf caddy, again with the surprises on this show. Nick, he’s the popular jock who keeps ogling Jane, is hitting up Billy for some dating advice, specifically regarding Jane. Billy’s first client today is Judge whatever who just happens to be Lulu’s dad. Billy makes googly eyes at her which totally throws off the judge and she books it out of there before their cover’s blown. The judge obviously knows what’s going on and he is not a happy camper especially since Billy’s better at golfing than him.

Back at the office, Jeremy is not loving Jane’s cold shoulder so he turns to India for comfort. That works out perfectly because she cons him into taking her out on a date. I think India needs to write a book on how to wear leather dresses to work in order to bone the sexy British man at the office. While Jeremy is daydreaming about India’s leather dress, Jane is getting chewed out again by Gray who hates the preview outfits. Gray offers her one last chance but not before taking off with her creepy troll friend Patricia.

Billy finishes his round of golf with the judge and gets a visit from Lulu at the clubhouse. Their sexcapade goes sour when Nick walks in on them and gives the usual “I didn’t see that” look. The next day at school Billy confronts him and begs the guy to keep his mouth shut. Nick complies under one condition, get him a date with Jane. It is a testosterone battle between these two very reminiscent of She’s All That or 10 Things I Hate About You which makes me like this more and more. Unfortunately, Jane’s not buying Nick’s act and she shoots that idea right down. Now Billy has to report back to his lover Lulu, she is furious that Nick even found out. Here’s a thought Lulu, if you don’t want anyone to find out about your secret relationship, stop making out in public, just saying. Thankfully Billy comes to his senses and dumps her on the spot.

At her office, Jane get a lovely visit from India who is just dripping with bitchittude. Jane tells her where to put it and Jeremy comes to her rescue helping her put together the line. The sexual tension runs rampant as they order in and dine on his desk, the same one that he and India where pounding on before. He totally tries to kiss her and she calls him on his shit which was awesome. Then he tells her not to worry about because they could “have something special” which sounds just as corny spelled out as it did when he said it. Sadly, nothing happened even though I so want it to despite the fact that she’s a minor.

The next morning Jane gets her first paycheck. A whopping grand! Billy finds her in a comatose state staring at the check like manna from Heaven. Then she and Billy engage in some very inappropriate displays of happiness rolling around on her carpet almost like India and Jeremy were rolling around on that desk. At school Ben and counselor Rita get in a little sexual spat about him working as the new athletic director. I can smell a hookup. In true John Hughes style, Nick and Billy strike up a partnership where they compare notes on getting girls, specifically Jane. Nick takes his new insight on the mystical Jane Quimby and awkwardly asks her out to the dance which she awkwardly accepts. It’s just magical…until Jane realizes she can’t go to the dance because of the fashion preview. Luckily, the dance is a block away from the preview and Jane has a new plan to dash around between the two. Look, I grew up in the 90s and I’ve seen this before, in fact I’ve tried it, I’ll predict now that this scheme will fail.

Following in Molly Ringwald’s footsteps, Jane takes her mom’s old pink dress and turns it into this super edgy pink leather thing which just makes Billy drool. She and Billy arrive at the dance but there is no sign of her at the preview which is just making Jeremy sweat. How can he impress her with his suave foreign ways if she’s not around? Finally, Jane summons up the courage to make eye contact with Nick sans drool and they tear up the dance floor and swap high school confessions.

She cuts their dance short by speeding off to the bathroom where Billy’s turned the middle stall into her own personal change room. Donning black, she heads to the preview and now Jeremy is sweating just to keep his job because they are on a time crunch. She fixes everything for the preview and jets between the two parties all night exchanging witty banter with Billy, making googly eyes at Nick, and trying to keep her scheme a secret from Jeremy. That is, until she accidentally shows up at the preview in the wrong dress. Then one of the dresses rips and Jeremy has the fabulous idea of putting Jane’s Pretty in Pink dress on the runway instead. Everyone loves it! Big surprise. Even Gray thinks she’s cool but that only mean India’s about to up her game.

At the dance, Nick’s sick of waiting around so he bails. When Jane finally shows up again the dance floor has been cleared out but guess who’s waiting for her like some sort of Jake Ryan. Just guess….okay, it’s Billy, which we were all expecting. I just love them together and now I’m more than excited to see what’s going on next week. Who is Jane going to choose? Please don’t be Nick! His acting is horrible and he kind of looks like he’s taken too many footballs to the face.
